About Alex
Alex Gillespie is an ICAEW chartered accountant and the Managing Director of eCounts. He trained at a Big Four firm before moving into eCommerce, and now works only with UK businesses that sell online: Amazon, Shopify, eBay, Etsy, WooCommerce and TikTok Shop sellers, from sole traders to limited companies.
He runs everything on the accounting side for eCounts clients: annual accounts, corporation tax, VAT and the tax planning that goes with it. He is the person on each client's quarterly call.
As an ICAEW member, Alex is bound by the institute's Code of Ethics and its continuing professional development requirements.
How we write and check our guides
Alex reviews the guides in our Learn section. Each one is written for UK online sellers and checked against the rules as they stand on the date shown.
- Facts are checked against primary sources: GOV.UK, HMRC manuals and notices, the UK Trade Tariff, and the platforms' own seller documentation.
- Every guide links to its sources and states the date its figures were checked.
- Guides are reviewed when rules, rates or platform fees change, and the "Updated" date shows the last review.
- Worked examples are illustrative and labelled as such. We don't invent client stories or results.
Guides are general information, not advice for your situation. If something looks out of date, tell us and we'll check it.
